It will be a guide as we build and reassemble our growing organization. Dean is far and away the preeminent source of business practice enhancement in the industry. A compelling read, an indispensable addition to every thinking business leader's bookshelf, and a set of ideas that may just re-wire the way you think about your own organization and about organizations in general.
I have read a few other of Meyer's works, and this book reads like a comprehensive capstone of so many of his excellent and time-tested ideas. He has a remarkable talent for developing complete frameworks that bring a surprising "science"-like precision to the pursuit of running cost-effective and strategically-aligned organizations. He is equally adept at describing and teaching these concepts in simple, direct, and enjoyable narratives.
While Meyer's ideas may come to life most vividly in IT organizations, it's important to note that they are applicable to any internal unit of an organization, or to the entire organization itself, across any industry or sector -- corporate, nonprofit, government, etc.
I first came into contact with his excellent book, "Internal Market Economics," while I was directing the finances of an internal IT organization in a nonprofit setting, but Meyer's work has continued to influence me heavily in my approach to my more varied leadership endeavors since holding that IT finance role.
Read this book, and then pick up and read "Internal Market Economics," and you will find yourself thinking and operating in a powerful new framework that brings clarity, logic, and vision to your work of leading teams and creating value at any level. Having just finished Dean's book on structure I would like to share that I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I read this book cover-to-cover, which is a major statement of validation in and of itself. It is easily the best book I have read on structure and teaming that aligns very well with the current leadership focus on establishing high performing and collaborative teams. In this book Dean leverages accepted business terms and concepts to make his point and where appropriate draws the connections to the concepts and terms used by IT Frameworks such as ITIL, Agile and Lean without getting lost in the jargon and theory of those models.
Well done Dean! I would recommend your book to anyone who is struggling with a silo IT cultural and experiences process issues which stem from structural flaws.
Which is pretty much every organization I have ever worked with. They create an environment wherein people feel free to fully express themselves, bringing unprecedented levels of energy, passion, and creativity to work. Evolutionary purpose.
Teal organizations base their strategies on what they sense the world is asking from them. Agile practices that sense and respond replace the machinery of plans, budgets, targets, and incentives. Paradoxically, by focusing less on the bottom line and shareholder value, they generate financial results that outpace those of competitors. If every person knows what they are working towards and each has dominion and ownership over their own areas whilst still feeling valued, they are going to work passionately to improve the company and its goals.
Breaking away from the norms of how businesses have been run for decades is never an easy thing to do and in the case of teal organizations, requires a huge amount of trust in those working at the company.
